To start the academic year off well, we are bringing together a growing network of educators at VU who share a commitment to meaningful, societally engaged teaching on 8 September 12:00 - 13:00. "CSL presents: A Broader Mind in Practice" is designed not just as a learning session, but as a space where colleagues can find each other, see who else is working on this, and keep lines short.
Together we explore how Community Service Learning can help make your course truly A Broader Mind-proof, going beyond the surface to look at what it actually takes to design education that is transformative for students. That means grappling with real questions: How do you embed reciprocity? How do you create the kind of learning experience that genuinely challenges students to see themselves in relation to society?
The session includes a short introduction and expert perspectives from colleagues at VU who are already doing this work. One of our experts is Frederique Demeijer, Assistant Professor of Transformative Learning at the Athena Institute and recent recipient of the Comenius Teaching Fellow grant for her work on embodied learning in transdisciplinary education.
You will leave with:
- Concrete ideas and ingredients to design or strengthen societally engaged education in your course
- New connections with colleagues across VU who share the same ambition
- We will work toward a concrete first step, something like a blueprint or roadmap, and we want to hear from you what would actually be most useful to take home.
If you are already part of the CSL network, this session is yours. If you are new to CSL and curious, you are just as welcome.
This page will be updated with speaker information, location, and programme details in the coming weeks.
