DESCRIPTION: To start the academic year off well, we are bringing toge
ther a growing network of educators at VU who share a commitment to m
eaningful, societally engaged teaching on 8 September 12:00 -
13:00. "CSL presents: A Broader Mind in Practice" is design
ed not just as a learning session, but as a space where colleagues ca
n find each other, see who else is working on this, and keep lines sh
ort. Together we explore how Community Service Learning can help make
your course truly A Broader Mind-proof, going beyond the surface to
look at what it actually takes to design education that is transforma
tive for students. That means grappling with real questions: How do y
ou embed reciprocity? How do you create the kind of learning experien
ce that genuinely challenges students to see themselves in relation t
o society? The session includes a short introduction and expert persp
ectives from colleagues at VU who are already doing this work. One of
our experts is Frederique Demeijer, Assistant Professor of Transform
ative Learning at the Athena Institute and recent recipient of the Co
menius Teaching Fellow grant for her work on embodied learning in tra
nsdisciplinary education. You will leave with:

Concrete ide
as and ingredients to design or strengthen societally engaged educati
on in your course

New connections with colleagues across VU
 who share the same ambition

We will work toward a concrete
first step, something like a blueprint or roadmap, and we want to he
ar from you what would actually be most useful to take home.
</ul
