Students are ultimatel y responsible for their own learning process and academic success, b ut in practice teachers often continue to play an important guiding r ole. Even with well-designed education, success is not guaranteed: s tudents make their own choices regarding how and when they learn.

In this session, we will explore insights from the literature o n self-directed learning, focusing on responsibility, ownership, agen cy, and agentic learning. We will translate these insights into pract ical ways of designing education that encourages students t o take a more active role in directing their own learning process.
