Free thinking cannot be taken for granted, especially at a time when restrictive ways of thinking are gaining ground. During this opening of the new academic year, we will explore the importance of freedom, imagination and responsibility, and the willingness to remain in dialogue with one another. Only then can free thinking continue to thrive.
Keynote by Roxane van Iperen
Lawyer and author Roxane van Iperen will deliver the keynote, reflecting on how we can continue to think freely in an age of Big Tech and authoritarian world leaders. We live in a world where we no longer believe what we see, but see what we believe. How do we navigate this reality?
She will be followed by Nikki Sterkenburg, Professor of Investigative Journalism, who will discuss the conditions necessary for free thinking. Sandjai Bhulai, Professor of Business Analytics, will then demonstrate how AI can strenghten our capacity for independent thought, something that requires both imagination and responsibility.
After the event, we will raise a glass together to the start of a new academic year. Will you be joining us?
